“Luau for King Lear” opens VTC’s 50th year
Valley Theater Company will open its 2010-2011 season in Prosser’s historic Princess Theatre with a summertime comedy, opening night gala and luau lunch.
VTC will present “Luau for King Lear” on August 6, 7 and 13 at 7:30 p.m. and August 14 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at the Princess Theatre, Sixth Street Art Gallery in Prosser, Grandview Safeway, Guerra's Coffee Co. in Sunnyside and Adventures Underground in Richland. Show tickets cost $10 for adults and $8 for seniors (65 and older) and students. Gala and luncheon tickets are $25 each and include the special event and performance (more information below).
“Luau for King Lear” opens as the Peaceful Glen Memorial Players are planning a new production in "their" building -- a former funeral parlor willed to them by the eccentric Archibald Donnelly. Enter his granddaughter Blair with news that the family is taking back the building. Suddenly Blair finds herself as the Players’ next show director and chooses the Shakespearean classic "King Lear," unaware that the play will have to take place in the tropics!
“Luau for King Lear” playwright Pat Cook also penned “Barbecuing Hamlet, which VTC presented in 2007. Both plays give the audience a “behind-the-scenes” look at community theater and the zany characters who love to steal the spotlight.
VTC’s production includes Becca Meyers, Kacie Askew, Nicole Pietz, Andy Graff, Dee Sparrow, Jim Milne, Julie Meyers, Ashley Christoferson, Esmy Jimenez, Sandy Freepons, Rick James and Amy Milne. Some of the actors are reprising their roles from VTC’s production of “Barbecuing Hamlet.”
Also reprising their roles are Candace Andrews, director; Linda Pietz, assistant director and Jim Milne, co-producer. Other production staff includes Mari Page, assistant director; Rick James and Andrews, co-producers; Dee Ann Till, costume coordinator; Heather Ruane, props coordinator; Bill Campbell and Amy Milne, lighting designers, and Dave Keller, sound designer.
The opening night gala on August 6 will feature Hawaiian-themed finger foods, Prosser wines and microbrews. The ticket, $25 per person, includes the gala and performance. Gala tickets are limited to 50 and are available in advance only, at the Princess Theatre, Sixth Street Gallery in Prosser and Adventures Underground in Richland.
A luau lunch buffet, also with Prosser wines and microbrews, will precede the August 14 matinee. The ticket, also $25 per person, includes the luau and performance. Luau tickets are limited to 100 and are available in advance only, at the Princess Theatre, Sixth Street Gallery in Prosser and Adventures Underground in Richland.
The play is suitable for all ages. A limited number of performance tickets will be available at the door 30 minutes before curtain. The Princess Theatre is located at 1228 Meade Avenue, Prosser.
VTC will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2011. Other shows in its season are “Our Town,” “Rumors” and “My Fair Lady.”
